- In a medium saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon of salted butter over medium heat until it bubbles gently. Add diced Honeycrisp apple cubes and 1 tablespoon of light brown sugar. Sauté for about 3-5 minutes until softened and caramelized.
- Once the apples are ready, stir in the remaining 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1 cup of old-fashioned oats, and a pinch of kosher salt. Pour in 2 cups of water and stir well.
- Increase the heat to bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to low and let it simmer gently for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Remove the oatmeal from heat and let it rest for a minute. Spoon it into bowls and drizzle with warm heavy cream or milk. Top with additional brown sugar, cinnamon, and toasted walnuts if desired.
