Ingredients

For the Oatmeal
  • 1 tablespoon Salted Butter Feel free to use unsalted for a milder taste.
  • 1 medium Honeycrisp Apple Substitute with Granny Smith or Gala for a tangy twist.
  • 2 tablespoons Light Brown Sugar Can be swapped with maple syrup for a unique flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon Increase the amount if you're a cinnamon lover!
  • 1 cup Old-Fashioned Oats Instant oats can be used but will change the final outcome.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Kosher Salt Regular salt works just as well if kosher isn’t available.
  • 2 cups Water According to oatmeal package instructions.
  • 1 cup Warm Heavy Cream or Milk Dairy-free alternatives like almond milk can be used as well.
  • 1/4 cup Chopped Toasted Walnuts Optional; omit for a nut-free version.

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a medium saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon of salted butter over medium heat until it bubbles gently. Add diced Honeycrisp apple cubes and 1 tablespoon of light brown sugar. Sauté for about 3-5 minutes until softened and caramelized.
  2. Once the apples are ready, stir in the remaining 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1 cup of old-fashioned oats, and a pinch of kosher salt. Pour in 2 cups of water and stir well.
  3. Increase the heat to bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to low and let it simmer gently for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
  4. Remove the oatmeal from heat and let it rest for a minute. Spoon it into bowls and drizzle with warm heavy cream or milk. Top with additional brown sugar, cinnamon, and toasted walnuts if desired.
