Step-by-Step Instructions for Crispy Homemade Onion Ring Chips
  1. Pour enough vegetable oil into a deep fryer or large pot to fully submerge the onion rings. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper. Whisk together until smooth.
  3. Set up three dipping stations: one for the buttermilk, one for flour mixture, and another for panko breadcrumbs. Pour 1 cup of buttermilk into a shallow bowl.
  4. Dip an onion ring into the buttermilk, coat it with the flour mixture, return to buttermilk, then dredge in panko breadcrumbs. Repeat for all onion rings.
  5. Lower the coated onion rings into the preheated oil in batches. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove the onion rings with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain. Serve immediately with dipping sauces.
