Step-by-Step Instructions for Homemade Bread
- In a large mixing bowl or stand mixer, combine 2 teaspoons of active yeast with 1 cup of warm water and a pinch of sugar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Add 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of oil to the bowl. Gradually mix in 3 cups of all-purpose flour, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-8 minutes until smooth and elastic. If using a mixer, knead on medium for 4-5 minutes.
- Place kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough, divide into two and shape into logs. Place in greased loaf pans.
- Cover loaves and let rise for 45 minutes to 1 hour until above the pans.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake loaves for 30-33 minutes until golden-brown and sound hollow when tapped.
- Cool on a wire rack for 10-15 minutes. Brush with melted butter if desired.
