Step-by-Step Instructions for Overnight French Toast Casserole
  1. Prepare the cubed bread by spreading it evenly on a baking sheet and allow it to dry for about an hour.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
  3. Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish and layer half of the dried bread cubes at the bottom. Optionally sprinkle cooked bacon or sausage.
  4. Layer the remaining bread cubes on top, pressing down gently.
  5. Pour the egg mixture over the layered bread, pressing down to ensure each piece is soaked.
  6. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F. After refrigeration, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and bake for 60-70 minutes until the top is golden.
