  • cup Low Sodium Soy Sauce Use regular soy sauce if low sodium is not available.
  • 2 tablespoons Light Brown Sugar White sugar can be used as a substitute.
  • 1 tablespoon Ginger (grated) Fresh ginger is preferred, but ground ginger works in a pinch.
  • 2 cloves Garlic (minced) Garlic powder can be used as an alternative.
  • Pinch Red Pepper Flakes Can be omitted or adjusted based on personal preference.
For the Stir Fry
  • 1 head Broccoli Other veggies like snap peas or bell peppers can be swapped in.
  • 1 pound Flank Steak Substitute with chicken, shrimp, or tofu for a different twist.
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil Can be replaced with vegetable or sesame oil.
  • 2 tablespoons Sesame Seeds Optional but recommended for extra texture.

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Mixing Bowl

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together cornstarch and water until smooth. Then, add in soy sauce, light brown sugar, grated ginger, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes. Set aside.
  2. Wash and cut the broccoli into bite-sized florets. Slice the flank steak thinly against the grain, about ¼ inch thick.
  3. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add broccoli florets and water, cover, and steam for about 5 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  4. Increase the skillet temperature to high and add another tablespoon of olive oil. Add sliced flank steak in a single layer, searing for 4-5 minutes until browned.
  5. Lower the heat to medium, pour the teriyaki sauce over the beef, stirring continuously for about 2 minutes. Fold in the cooked broccoli.
  6. Remove from heat and garnish with sesame seeds. Serve over steamed rice or noodles.
